Dominique Rey is a multidisciplinary artist based in Winnipeg, Canada whose practice includes video, performance, painting, collage, sculpture, and photography. Using immersive methodologies, Rey’s assemblages, installations and sculptures distil her experiences of working with specific, culturally marginalized subjects and figures. These include groups as disparate as strippers in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (Selling Venus/Vénus au miroir), and a disappearing order of Nuns (Les Filles de la Croix), to performance-based projects where she dives inward to explore the unconscious “other” within. Her recent work focuses on practices of recontextualization and translation, one form this takes is in the creation of photo-based collages using her personal archives that she then re-interprets into large-scale sculptures.

Dominique Rey’s work has been exhibited across Canada, the United States, and Europe, including MOCCA (Toronto), MacLaren Art Centre (Barrie), Plug In ICA (Winnipeg), Gallery TPW (Toronto), Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge), Centre Clark (Montreal), Tabacka Art Center (Kosice, Slovakia), and Art Center/South Florida (Miami Beach). Rey is the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, and La Fondation Ricard. Her work has been reviewed in the Globe & Mail, Border Crossings, Frieze, Canadian Art, Flare, and the Winnipeg Free Press. She holds a MFA in Photography from Bard College (NY) and a MFA in New Media from the Transart Institute (Berlin). Her art appears in numerous collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Province of Manitoba, and the Wedge Collection. Dominique Rey was awarded the Canada Council for the Arts International Artist Residency in 2016 at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
