Dominique Rey’s work delves into peripheral subjectivities, from individuals and groups of people on the margins of dominant culture, to performance-based works that mine the terrain of the unconscious. She is interested in examining the other within society, as well as a deep sense of being strangers to ourselves. She utilizes modes of fragmentation to explore the construction of self as it relates to current experiences of dislocation and disorientation. One form this takes is in the creation of collages derived from her photographic archives that are re-interpreted into large-scale sculptures. Her decision to reactivate this personal language becomes an added layer of inscription. What connects her various works is “the tension of being outside one’s own desires, a palpable absence of certainty and longing for connection – both from within and without” (Sandra Fraser).
Dominique Rey is a multidisciplinary francophone artist whose work has been exhibited across Canada, the United States, and Europe, including Tabacka Art Center (Kosice, Slovakia), Galleri Box (Goteborg, Sweden), Art Center/South Florida (Miami Beach), National Galley of Canada (Ottawa), MOCCA (Toronto), Remai Modern (Saskatoon), Plug In ICA (Winnipeg), MacLaren Art Centre (Barrie), Gallery TPW (Toronto), Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge), and Centre Clark (Montreal). Her art appears in numerous collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, Remai Modern, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Scotiabank, and Province of Manitoba. Dominique Rey is the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, and La Fondation Ricard. Her work has been reviewed in the Globe & Mail, Border Crossings, Frieze, Canadian Art, Black Flash Magazine, Flare, and the Winnipeg Free Press. She holds a MFA in Photography from Bard College (NY) and a MFA in New Media from the Transart Institute (Berlin). Rey was awarded the Canada Council for the Arts International Artist Residency at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2016.
