The Abzurbs, a visual art and performance group, will be showing and performing in Ottawa in late April 2011.
Founded in 2003 by Dominique Rey, Cliff Eyland and Tannis Kohut, the group quickly grew to include artists and musicians William Eakin, Ryan Ahoff, Lancelot Coar, Amanda Ing, Kevin Barkman, Vanessa Rigaux, Craig Love, Florian Lassnig, Ronnie Araya and others, all of whom adopt Abzurb names for Abzurb activities.
The Abzurbs think fondly of Fluxus, Dada, Situationist and other performance artists as they play, but they also make objects, including photographs, paintings, drawings, installation, sculptures, videos, and works in multimedia and design.
The Abzurbs encourage free play and unrepressed, impulsive behavior in themselves and their audiences. The group has played officially and unofficially at Gavin Brown’s bar in New York City, at Winnipeg’s Platform, Edge and Cream Galleries, in Quebec City, Montreal and spontaneously in Toronto, New York, and Winnipeg. Its work has been published in the United Kingdom’s Frieze magazine and on the cover of Canada’s Broken Pencil magazine.
